Unkal Lake

One of the main attractions of Hubli is the Unkal Lake. Spread across an area of 200 acres, this beautiful lake sees a large number of people flocking around, especially on the weekends. The lake is around 110 years old but its charm doesn’t seem to fade. It is also the main source of drinking water in Hubli.

Since it is spread over a vast area it can accommodate a huge number of visitors. The lake offers a calm and serene atmosphere for those planning to spend a quite evening. It is surrounded by a blossoming green garden that adds to the scenic view. People specially gather here to view the beautiful sunset during summers. The cool breeze flowing during the evening and the mesmerizing view of the sunset are enough to rejuvenate you. The huge statue of Swami Vivekananda that stands tall in the middle of the lake further enhances its beauty and makes it one of the most sought after tourist places in Hubli.

The lake not only offers a great way to be one with the nature and find peace amid the chaotic city life but also provides recreational facilities for both children as well as adults. Thus, it is not just a spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat but also for those planning to spend a fun-filled evening with friends and family. A boat ride in the lake can be quite refreshing and serves as a major attraction here.

You will find a large number of hawkers selling different snack items as well as small utility and gift items. The locals as well as the tourists look forward to tasting street food offered by these hawkers as it tastes good and is also priced reasonably. The visitors may even purchase small utility as well as gift items from these hawkers to take back as souvenirs.

Historical Connotation

While Unkal Lake has emerged as a popular picnic spot for the people living in and around Hubli and Dharwad not many are aware that it also has a historical connotation attached to it. It is known to be the Karma Bhoomi of Shri Siddappajja. This saintly person was born in 1859 and gave up all the worldly desires in pursuit of peace at a tender age of 14. He stayed in the Unkal Mailarlingda Temple until his death on 31st January 1921.

The locals here organize an annual fair in the fond memory of Shri Siddappajja since then. Several people gather around and take part in different cultural activities held during this fair. A number of stalls serving various scrumptious food items are also set up here to add to the celebration.

Quite a few hotels have been set up near the Unkal Lake to provide accommodation for the tourists. Hotel Naveen is the nearest accommodation option available here. It is located at merely 0.7 km from the lake. The hotel is equipped with all the modern day facilities that are needed for a comfortable stay. One night stay at the hotel may cost you around Rs. 3,500. Clarks Inn and Hotel Metropolis are also situated close by.

Sagar Palace, A-1 Punjab, Rasoi and Chicken Hut Fast Food are a few good restaurants located in the vicinity. They offer Hubli's specialty food as well as other mouthwatering delicacies.
